  • Spectral Previews now handled by SpecView. Provides for interactive spectral previews and overplotting of previews
  • Results form now can be displayed as the traditional Form or a single table. User can specify preference for the default look and feel in the Preferences
  • Simplified user preferences (now only two tabs, one for program preferences and one for selecting archives to load at startup)
  • Improved performance (faster queries from replacement of old Lisp based SQL generation tool Quick)
  • Link buttons on some search forms to automatically link users results to related queries on different search forms
  • Qualification table now has Info buttons to easily get information about the qualifier's attributes, definition, and possible values
  • Improved layout of button bars to bring buttons closer to where they are needed and to reduce wasted screenspace

    Highlights:

  • Multiple archives available in StarView (HST and FUSE)
  • Improved "smart" cross qualification now can automatically cross qualify on coordinates or object name
  • Ability to enter coordinates in equinox other than J2000 in the Target Resolver tool (query's are still done in J2000 and results are diplayed in J2000)
  • Improved performance (faster queries)
  • Retrieval now loaded from the archive at run-time so changes in retrieval do not require an upgrade to the program
  • Save SQL allows user to have StarView create SQL for them to use in another environment or to see how a query is being done
  • Attribute table formatting can now be saved with the form so when you select the table button from a form, the resulting table view of the results will be in the saved field order and column widths
  • Pull-down menus are restructured to include all button bar functionality with associated hot keys to allow for more keyboard driven functionality
  • Recent news from the archives and StarView is now available.  News items are displayed upon startup if there is new or unread information.  News items are always accessible from the Tools pull-down menu
  • Once available, StarView will support th enew retrieval options such as CD and DVD

    StarView version 6.2 
    (installed on 12 April 2001)

    Highlights:

    1. Improved query speed.
    2. Now runs under Java 1.3 AND 1.2.2.  Note 1.3 is up to 30% faster!!!
    3. StarView has an improved look and feel and a revamped help facility.  Help is available where you see this icon  .  Help is supported in three modes
      1. Context Sensitive Help - You can click the help Icon and then click on a GUI element to learn more about that element
      2. Browsable Help - You can browse the Help documentation in the JavaHelp browser (from under the Help menu)
      3. Help with Next Step - When you are stuck or wonder what to do next, typing control-Z or selecting Help with Next Step from the Help menu will give you information about where to go next in StarView.
    4. The Quick form is now available from the Quick button on the button bar.
    5. Retrieval will work with the new on the fly reprocessing system from the STScI HST archive.
    6. Requests can be resubmitted from outside of StarView.
    7. Look and feel upgrade to the Cross Qualification and Export features
    8. Ability to store and restore datasets in the retrieval tool.
    9. Links to astronomical references for datasets.
    10. Interaction with VTT tool from APT (to be released May 1, 2001).

    StarView version 6.1
    (installed on 23 October 2000)

    Highlights:

  • StarView 6.1 has an improved look and feel and a revamped help facility.  Help is available where you see this icon .
  • To inform users when there is activity going on behind the scenes, the StarView logo in the upper-right corner flashes while StarView is waiting due to database communication.
  • Users are now able to update archive information using StarView.  The Retrieval portion of StarView allows users to change their archive password and verify their shipping address when a tape is requested.  Users also have the option of either a dat or exabyte tape.
  • For users who often search for data using the same query, StarView now allows qualification saves and restorations.  Users may also import a file of dataset names directly into Retrieval and bypass the search process.
  • StarView also offers multiple record selection using the standard shift-click technique.

  • added constraints to the DbFieldViewer display when user gets more information about a database field
  • changed Overlay to need only datasetname on form
  • setBusy/wait when scanning for single or multiple records to give user feedback by animating SV icon

  • created first help package and added help icons to many places in StarView
  • fixed resolver so it does not look for any field name, but pushes by logical type alone to find ra and decl
  • now using new urlformatter to format urls rather than doing it in each object
  • tape address verifictaion and password changer added to retrieval
  • removed tape radio button from retrieval and added dat and exabyte radio buttons ( no density or blocking )
  • fixed the Calendar.MONTH = month of year - 1 problem when saving requests to disk with timestamps.  6.0 saved requests are dated in the previous month.
  • added option to remember password in retrieval between sessions
  • added new splash screen and ststus reports while starview loads
  • added browserlauncher information message to messagehandler method when launching browser rather than forwarding active browser to a URL.
