How to download StarView version 6

Note to STScI users: StarView is installed on the STScI unix science cluster. You do not need to install your own copy.  Please use the StarView command to execute this site wide instalation. STScI users of Windows or Mac OS X should download their own personal copy and install it on their machine.

StarView version 6 is available as a Java 2 application. Currently most systems running UNIX and the Windows OSes have JAVA 2 Runtime Engines (sometimes referred to as JAVA 1.2). You will need  to make sure that you have a version of Java that is 1.2 compliant. To check to see which version of JAVA is on your machine, on the command line (either DOS prompt for Windows or your command line shell under UNIX)  type java -version (it should respond saying it is version 1.2.2). Please refer to Sun's JAVA pages for more information about acquiring a Java 2 Runtime engine if your version is not 1.2.2. For Macintosh users, please see Apple's site to check on the current release of JAVA for the Mac. Note at the time this was written, the Macintosh JAVA engine was only at 1.1.8 (even though it is called MJR 2.2), though we believe that StarView might work if the SWING components are added. Again, please refer to the Apple site with regard to adding SWING to their Java Runtime Engine.

Please note many people have had problems with JVM 1.3 and StarView. We are working to correct the problems that were introduced with this new JVM.

STScI users please read this page to see how to add JAVA to your .envrc.

Once you have identified and/or installed your JAVA 1.2 Runtime Engine, simply download the installer for your platform. Downloading and installation instructions are available for

Note that StarView has an auto-update feature. You will not have to download any installers in the future, as the program will ask you if you wish to update it when updates are available and, if allowed to, will reinstall all files as needed and restart the program.
